Elton John is unsure when he’ll be able to record again as he continues to deal with loss of vision.
The “Rocket Man” singer, 77, shared in a “Good Morning America” interview that aired Monday that he “unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye” due to an infection.
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see,” he said. “And my left eye’s not the greatest. There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do (an interview) like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”
John, who said he is “taking an initiative” to improve his vision, added, “It kind of floored me. I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything. I can’t watch anything.”
The EGOT winner previously shared on social media in September that he has been dealing with a “severe eye infection” that left him with “limited” vision in one eye. He said he is healing but that it has been an “extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”

“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks,” he wrote. “I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”
John received a flood of well-wishes when he shared his September health update, with tennis star Billie Jean King writing, “Sending our love and support your way. Feel better soon, friend.”

The five-time Grammy-winning singer ended his final tour last summer. In 2021, he postponed a series of shows on the tour and said he would undergo a hip operation due to his “increasing difficulties moving” following a fall.
Last August, John was also hospitalized after a slip at home. A spokesperson told USA TODAY that he was “immediately discharged” and was in good health after check ups.
John is the subject of the new documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and hits Disney+ on Dec. 13. He collaborated with Brandi Carlile on the song “Never Too Late,” which John told “GMA” “encompasses what I’ve been through.”
“I’ve been through so much, and I’ve come out the other side,” he said. “But I’m always looking forward.”
